INO project (2009)
Design and art research project
The project was conducted in cooperation with residents of the Ino area in Toride, Japan. We set out to gain insights into the lives and hardships of people living in a shrinking and aging part of a city, located in the exurbs of Tokyo, Japan. We handed out disposable cameras to anonymous people and ask them to shot parts and aspects of Ino which they like or dislike. After collecting these photos and mounting them on a wall, we invited people over to discuss them with us. To make it easier to get into a conversation, we asked them to rate the photos and speculate whether they depict negative or positive sides of the area. The project was also a test case for questions of intercultural communication.
